The Friday 5/27/16 edition of the Darien News featured a front page story about Nancy Herling who is replacing Ron Hammer as Director of Post 53.
Incredibly, there was no mention of the BOS voting to have Paramedics based in Darien. You would think that ground breaking decision might have come up in the interview.
Many years ago, when I first started writing about the need for Darien based Paramedics, I linked Post to Darien’s Culture of Volunteering. Herling is a serial volunteer. Post, PTOs, the Senior Center, ABC and At Home in Darien were all mentioned as volunteer organizations with which Herling has served.
I do not recall seeing the word patient in the article. I am not surprised. Herling does say “I like helping people.” However, when you read the rest of the article, you get the impression that the people she enjoys helping are the DHS Posties: “Now I know why people teach, watching these kids grow up is really exciting.”
So the purpose of Post 53, Darien’s EMS system, is to provide a meaningful learning experience for DHS Posties. The patients are an afterthought.
There is Dumb. There is Dumber. There is Dumbest. Then, there is DARIEN DUMB.
